Volunteer Opportunities

Brag Party with Peggy Klaus

The New York Academy of Medicine - May 2015

The annual Brag Party is an event for high school juniors from TYWLS of Astoria, Brooklyn, East Harlem, and Queens. We need energetic and fabulous volunteers to help teenage girls learn the art of bragging and building self-confidence! Peggy Klaus, communication guru and author, will show the girls and volunteers how to deal with two of the most difficult "soft skills" for women to master: the impostor syndrome and self-promotion. This high-energy, experiential workshop provides insights, strategies, tools, and techniques for conquering the little voice inside your head that whispers self-defeating thoughts and then teaches students how to toot their own horn (in the right way, of course!) about the great things they have accomplished.

TYWLS Summer Explorers

At companies and organizations all over New York City; July 2014

TYWLS Explorers is a three-week summer program designed by YWLN for The Young Women’s Leadership Schools. This summer program provides rising 7th-10th grade girls with enriching experiences outside of their everyday community and is designed to combat the summer learning slide that occurs when students are out of school for an extended period of time. Through an enriching menu of daily hand-on trips, workshops, and projects, TYWLS Explorers provides students with three weeks of experiential and contextual learning needed to remain active and alert; activities include college trips, poetry writing workshops, job shadowing, museum trips, and more. These experiences are made possible through YWLN’s many partnerships with community organizations, cultural institutions, corporations, and universities.

Host a group of 40 girls in your office or workplace!  YWLN provides transportation and trained staff and counselors to supervise and help with the day’s activities.  We work with your company leading up to the day to make the experience enriching for both the students and volunteers. We ask that you provide a healthy lunch, an engaging, interactive workshop between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., along with volunteers who are excited to work with our students!

This is a series of evening workshops for 12th grade students and volunteer coaches. The purpose is to help students gain the skills and confidence that will prepare them for college and for students to get valuable guidance and advice from adult volunteers.  Each volunteer is paired with 1-2 girls at each workshop. This year, we are expanding Jumpstart to College to serve seniors at Astoria and Queens, while continuing our three-part workshop series at TYWLS of East Harlem!

Each workshop runs from 5:15-7:30 pm.

TYWLS Works!

At companies and organizations all over New York City; October 2014 - April 2015

We are looking for companies to host 6-8 students (10th grade, age 15) at their office for a half-day program that opens their eyes to the world of work.  We seek companies that can accommodate our students and give them a “big picture” perspective of the different types of jobs in the company and industry, as well as a flavor of day-to-day responsibilities.  The day will last from 10 am – 2 pm. We will work with you to create an agenda and program and will ask you to provide engaging, diverse volunteers and lunch.  It is a great opportunity for students to gain first-hand knowledge in the workplace and meet terrific role models.
