Queen Latifah, Danny Meyer, and Stephen B. Siegel Honored by CBI on May 28, 2015!
CollegeBound Initiative, a signature program of Young Women's Leadership Network, honored a stellar line-up of distinguished individuals on May 28, 2015 at the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall.
“We are thrilled to celebrate such distinguished honorees and applaud their commitment to educational access and brighter futures,” said Tisch. To date, CBI has helped enroll nearly 7,000 students in college and has secured more than $200 million in financial aid. Tisch established the Initiative in 2001 to create an opportunity for low-income students to benefit from the kind of intensive and comprehensive college counseling that is offered in private schools.
CBI places full-time, highly trained college counselors in 24 high-need public schools in New York City. Just as in the best private schools, CBI counselors do it all: college selection, tours, test prep, financial aid, scholarship resources, applications, essays, and interviews, among other critical aspects of college counseling. CBI counselors’ primary responsibility is to work with students and families, as early as sixth grade to create a college going culture. Students counseled through CBI enroll in four-year colleges at nearly double the rate of their peers.
Queen Latifah, who was honored at the event, recently joined Tisch, CBI Director Jon Roure, and students at CBI’s East Side Community High School in celebration of college acceptance day on May 1st. “Queen Latifah, Danny Meyer and Stephen Siegel are making a difference in the lives of young people,” notes Tisch. Proceeds from the event, which starts at 6:30 and ends promptly at 8:00 pm, will support CBI programming and the more than 13,000 students served this academic year.
Tisch created and established CBI in 2001 after pioneering the program in The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem, the first all-girls public schools in New York City in more than 30 years, which she founded in 1996. CBI, which continues to grow in impact and scope, is a nationally recognized model of success sought out by educational partners, colleges, and policymakers. This year alone, CBI students have been accepted to colleges across the country, including Vassar, Princeton, Columbia, Skidmore, Cornell, NYU, Baruch, and other private and public schools.
